Going on a family bike ride is a great way to enjoy summer, get moving, and create wonderful memories. To make the experience enjoyable for everyone, you just need to choose the right route, bring the necessary gear, and above all, respect the children’s pace.
Choose a suitable route
For a successful ride, choose a safe, low-traffic route suited to the level of the youngest rider. Bike paths, greenways, and parks are generally excellent options.
For a first outing, it’s better to choose a short distance. You can always extend the ride if the kids still have energy. The goal isn’t to cover as many kilometers as possible, but to have a good time together.
Check the bikes before you head out
Before you leave, take a few minutes to check the condition of the bikes:
- Inflate the tires properly.
- Test the brakes.
- Check that the chain runs smoothly.
- Adjust the saddle to each child’s height.
- Make sure nothing is loose.
A properly adjusted bike will be more comfortable and easier to control. If you’re unsure, a tune-up by a professional will let you ride with peace of mind.
Wear a properly fitted helmet
Every family member should wear a helmet that fits properly. It should sit level on the head, about two fingers above the eyebrows. The straps should form a “V” around the ears and be tight enough to keep the helmet in place.
Take the opportunity to remind children of a few simple rules: keep a safe distance, look ahead, signal their intentions, and stop at agreed-upon spots.

Make sure you’re clearly visible
Visibility is essential, especially when you’re riding with young children. Equip bikes with a rear light and opt for clothing or accessories in bright colors.
If you’re using a child trailer, add a highly visible safety flag. Since the trailer is lower than a bike, the flag makes it easier for other cyclists and drivers to see it. Before you leave, also check that the reflectors and lights are working properly.
Plan for the essentials
Even for a short ride, remember to bring:
- Water bottles
- Easy-to-carry snacks
- Sunscreen
- A small first aid kit
- An inner tube or a basic repair kit
- A light layer in case the temperature changes
On very hot days, choose cooler times, such as morning or late afternoon, and plan for more breaks.
Keep the ride fun
A family ride doesn’t have to be long to be a success. Take time to enjoy the scenery, make a few stops, and highlight the progress of your young cyclists.
