Indoor cycling is an excellent way to stay fit, improve endurance, and train effectively, no matter the weather or time of day. Whether you’re following a training plan or simply staying active through the winter, here’s everything you need to train properly on a bike mounted to a trainer.
1. The bike
Good news: almost any bike can be used on a trainer. Road, gravel, or even mountain bikes—the important thing is that the bike is properly adjusted to your usual position. A saddle at the right height and a comfortable position will make all the difference on longer sessions.
2. A good tire for indoor training
Tire choice is often underestimated, but it has a direct impact on noise, wear and training quality.
- A trainer-specific tire is highly recommended
- It is designed to withstand the heat and friction generated by the trainer roller
- It reduces noise and provides more consistent resistance
Using a standard road or mountain tire on a wheel-on trainer causes rapid wear and more vibration. A trainer tire is therefore a small investment that greatly improves the experience.
3. The trainer
There are several types of trainers, but they all have the same goal: to provide stable and safe resistance for indoor cycling.
- Wheel-on trainer: the bike is attached by the rear wheel. Simple, effective, and affordable.
- Direct-drive trainer: the rear wheel is removed and the bike is mounted directly on the trainer. Quieter, more precise, and often compatible with training apps.
- Roller trainers: provide a riding sensation similar to being outdoors.
The choice mainly depends on your budget, your goals, and how often you train. You can check out our Trainer Guide for more information.
4. A mat and a front wheel riser
A training mat is highly recommended. It protects the floor from sweat, reduces vibrations, and limits noise.
A front wheel riser block helps keep the bike upright and provides a more natural position, improving comfort and stability.
5. Hydration
Indoors, you sweat much more than outside. Good hydration is therefore essential to maintain performance and avoid fatigue.
- Keep at least one water bottle within reach
- For longer or more intense sessions, a drink with electrolytes is ideal
- Drink regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty
6. Ventilation and comfort
A fan completely changes the indoor cycling experience. It helps regulate body temperature, improves comfort, and allows you to train longer without overheating.
You can also add the following items:
- a towel for sweat
- breathable clothing
- a well-ventilated area
7. Staying motivated with training platforms
One of the biggest challenges of indoor cycling is motivation. Subscribing to a virtual training platform can completely transform the experience.
Apps like Zwift, Rouvy, or MyWhoosh let you ride in virtual worlds, follow structured training plans, and join group rides or virtual events. These platforms make training more fun, more engaging, and help you stay consistent.
