How to extend your bike’s life

A well-maintained bike rides better… and lasts longer 🚲
The good news? Most of the costly repairs we see in the workshop could be avoided with regular maintenance, especially after winter.

Here’s what you can do to extend your bike’s lifespan and keep your budget under control.

1️⃣ Don’t wait for something to break

A squeaky brake, skipping gears, or a dry chain are often early signs of wear.
Ignoring these small details can lead to:

  • an overly worn chain that damages the cassette

  • poorly adjusted brakes that cause premature pad wear

  • parts that will need to be replaced instead of simply adjusted

👉 Preventive maintenance almost always costs less than a major repair.

2️⃣ Cleaning your bike… the right way

Dirt, salt and moisture are the worst enemies of mechanical components.

Best practices:

  • Rinse with lukewarm water (no high-pressure spray)

  • Quick-drying

  • Season-appropriate lubrication

Avoid: spraying high-pressure water directly on the bearings and pivots.

3️⃣ The chain: the most neglected part

A poorly maintained chain wears out quickly… and takes the cassette and chainrings with it.

Key takeaways:

  • A well-lubricated chain lasts longer

  • An overly worn chain can double your repair bill

👉 In the workshop, we always check wear levels to avoid nasty surprises.

4️⃣ Regular maintenance extends your bike’s lifespan

A bike that gets yearly maintenance:

  • rolls more efficiently

  • stays safe

  • holds its value better

  • requires fewer major replacements

That’s exactly why tune-ups exist: to fix things before they get expensive.

5️⃣ Why February is the ideal time

Getting your bike serviced in February means:

  • avoid the spring rush

  • head out with a bike that’s ready for the first nice days

  • spread out the costs instead of fixing everything urgently

To sum up

Good maintenance means:
✔ fewer unexpected repairs
✔ a longer-lasting bike
✔ a better riding experience

If you want to make sure your bike is in good condition for the coming season, drop by and see us in store. We’ll assess your bike and recommend the maintenance best suited to how you ride. You can also check out our tune-up service for an overview of the options available in store.
